OUR STORY

Afrikáért alapítvány

The Foundation for Africa is a public benefit organisation for development and aid created by a civil initiative. It was first registered in Hungary in 2002 and later in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2004. Mr France Mutombo Tshimuanga, leader of the foundation is a citizen of the DRC, and studied theology in Hungary. In 1999 he participated in a humanitarian mission organized by the American NGO called Steps To Life and his experience on the journey, the unimaginable poverty, distress and social differences between the two continents prompted him to provide aid for his homeland within the framework of an organization.

The aim of the Foundation for Africa is mainly to facilitate development, aid and the forming of civil society through providing help in the fields of education, society and health care in

The Foundation also provides medicine, surgical instruments for several health care centers both in the capital and in the country and carries out development programs as well. In Hungary, the Foundation organizes lectures to promote tolerance and provide knowledge on Africa and programs to present the cultures of the African continent.

In 2007 the Foundation widened its sphere of activities to the organisation of  Humanitarian Tourism programmes, and to the spreading of our activity to Ethiopia in cooperation with our American partner organization.

We experience extraordinarly inequality and extremity in our world today, in numerous areas of Africa there has been an indescribable poverty and necessity occurs in every areas of life.

We, at the Foundation for Africa dream about an Africa, where

  • Everybody – with particular attention to woman and children – live in human conditions
  • Writing and reading are basic skills
  • Families can take care of themselves
  • People are responsable for their own wealth and healthy enviroment.
  • There is not extraordinary poverty, lack of education and ignorance, people – beside keeping their colorful culture and natural values – create a humane future as a basis of sustainability while alloying modern and traditional technologies.

We have comitted ourselves to useful, practical knowledge transfer that can be transplanted into everyday life. Our vision is an educated and trained African generation who is able to facilitate its own uprising and do against inequality.

We dream about an open and tolerant world.

OUR MISSION

Supporting the uprising of Africa by raising educated generations and by actively representing the cause of Africa. Foundation for Africa provides education, health and social services for African people in need, primarly woman and children.

We cannot solve all of the problems of Africa but we can reduce poverty. Our Mission is, together with the caring supporters with helping intention, building on the strength of volunteering and on the community of „Helping is privilige!”, to raise active, educated and self-sufficient generations who are responsable of their own fate, which would ground the long-term sustainable development processes. Our community’s labor of love is defending human values, facilitating Africa’s progression, creating equal oppurtunities, serving the people in need, promoting solidarity and tolerance with the strength of love.

We build a bridge between Africa and Europe to solve worldwide problems, primarly reduce poverty and backwardness in the sign of understanding and cooperation among the peoples of Africa. We contribute to social responsability, open-mindedness and to creating a community that is susceptible to the humanitarian attitude. Furthermore, our work is the active represention of the cause of Africa.

THE GOALS OF THE FOUNDATION FOR AFRICA IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION, HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES:

  • Establishing centres for disadvantaged children in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tansania as well as in other African countries in the future, when funding is available. These centres will provide all the essential facilities to improve the children’s living conditions and their chances for a better future. These include orphan care, education, health care, income-generating activities and vocational training.
  • Establishing new educational, social and health institutions and operating the already existing ones, where children have an opportunity to live and study under dignified and humane circumstances.
  • Procuring and delivering educational materials, school stationery and different presentation tools for schools in Africa.
  • Training local professionals and technicians who pass on their knowledge after the completion of the program to the local community and continue the work of the Foundation on the ground on a permanent basis.
  • Organising presentations with the purpose of prevention and information on diseases, lifestyle, birth control and other health issues in Africa.
  • Guaranteeing all the personal and material essentials to fulfill the Foundation’s goals.
  • Organising information sessions and exhibitions in Hungary for those interested in African culture.
  • Providing information and practical assistance in the prevention of diseases and the preservation of health.
  • Delivering hands-on knowledge that aims for self-sufficiency in agriculture, food conservation, hygiene and growing crops on own land.
  • Establishing social institutions and supporting the smooth operation of the already existing ones, where all the opportunities are ensured for the mental, spiritual and social development of the residents.
  • Seeking cooperation with other institutions and organizations to ensure that every disadvantaged person enjoys equal opportunities.
  • Providing humanitarian assistance for those in need by delivering clothes, school materials (school books in French and English), medicines, bandage, technical and other devices or financing particular medical treatments.
  • Acting and helping as a mediator if a public or private organization in Hungary is interested in supporting an organization in Africa.

OUR ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

Our activity’s purpose is, with the strenght of unity, righteousness and authenticity, by keeping the humanitarian attitude to set an example on the areas of advocacy and awereness.

    OUR ACTIVITIES IN AFRICA

ESTABLISHING SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL CENTER FOR CHILDREN

On the long run, the aim of the foundation is to establish centers for disadvantaged children in the DR Congo, Tanzania and Ethiopia, and hopefully in other African countries in order to improve their circumstances and provide basic conditions for a better future: orpahanage, education, healthcare, vocational training.

    PROGRAM FOR SUPPORTING STUDENTS

The Foundation for Africa maintains College Othniel Primary and Secondary School for around 700 students in the capital of the DRC, Kinshasa. The school was a starting point of the foundation’s humanitarian mission when it was created and one of the cornerstones of the planned social and educational centres for children. In Africa it is a common problem that the state does not finance the educational sector. This is also the case in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Tanzania. Less the 2 from 10 children finishes secondary education, and only 6 of 10 can even start primary school. We believe that it is necessary to provide quality education future African generations so they can break out from poverty.

The Foundation for Africa has created a transparent student support program based on personal information which gives an opportunity to finance school fees individually for students studying at College Othniel. Standard educational support is 2900 HUF / month / child (approx. 13 US$) and an additional 2900 HUF each year – a so-called „thirteenth“ quarter – which is appropriated for minor renovations at the school.

We believe that it is important to establish a personal and interactive relationship between the supporters and the supported child. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to maintain constant relationship with teachers, staff and students of the African institutions. By providing a comprehensive portray of students available for sponsorship, we wish to give a realistic picture of the African, more specifically the Congolese educational systems and the everyday lives of the students.

Since the beginning of the student support program, the schools have been constantly developing and growing. In 2005-2006 six new classes were launched and 500 more students enrolled, today we proudly say that we host more than 700 students and around 100 orphans. The second block of College Othniel is still under construction, so in the future we will be able to provide affordable education for even more students.

    OUR ACTIVITIES IN HUNGARY

The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something

    History

In our activities we place particular emphasis on the authentic representation of Africa, the actual situation on the continent and the real options for providing help to the people living there. Our aim is to enable more and more people in Hungary to join the global assistance and contribute to the improvement of the living conditions, particularly of those living in Africa.

To promote the notion of equal opportunities, we are trying to educate Hungarian society and organize presentations as well as screenings, exhibitions and other cultural events on the importance of tolerance across the country.

Over the course of the past few years we have held nearly 70 to 100 presentations every year for an audience eager to learn about the real face of Africa, both in the capital and in the country,

    •

for instance in Debrecen, Pécs, Kecskemét, Elek, Békéscsaba, Győr, Abony, Gyömrő, Nyíregyháza, Dunaföldvár, to name but a few locations. We have participated either as organiser or guest or exhibitor in dozens of cultural events that promoted the social responsibility of the individuals (such as the Tranzit Festival or the Africa-Asia Days) or the better integration of the migrants (such as the Migrant Festival). We are there in the Sziget Festival and in the Valley of Arts as well every year. Our presentations are compiled from the photos and videos taken during our missions to Congo and Ethiopia and from our personal experience and impressions. We regularly organise exhibitions from a careful selection of our photos, child drawings made by the pupils of our school in Congo, as well as a collection of African objects and works of art.

In Summer 2007 we organised for the first time a ten-day Africa Valley Festival, which was one of the official events during the Valley of Arts in Kapolcs.

If you know about any event or place that might be interested in hosting our programs, exhibitions or presentations, please contact Magdolna Reisinger, program coordinator at the Foundation for Africa!

    INFORMATIVE PRESENTATIONS

Our informative presentations aim at showing the real, authentic face of the African continent. The approximately one-hour presentation is held in Hungarian and is complemented by a video and photo projection. It is followed by a joint discussion where the audience can ask questions and talk about their impressions and experiences.

We offer traditional African handicrafts for sale and upon request we organize a short African music performance, as well as food and drink tasting.

So far we have been invited to nearly 150 institutions in some 100 towns and cities.

PRESENTATIONS TO PROMOTE TOLERANCE RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS

The goal of our presentation to promote tolerance and raise public awareness is to teach a young generation of Hungarians to be tolerant, open-minded, to think free of discrimination and to develop a positive attitude towards development work in poor countries. Our presentations also provide them with a wide range of hands-on knowledge of this field. By using a method based on visual tools and personal experiences, we are introducing young people between the ages of 8 and 26 to African culture on every level, from primary schools to universities, in local cultural centres and cultural festivals.

Our long-term objective is to develop a positive and accepting attitude in the young generations, not only towards the African people but also towards other groups and nationalities. We envision that with the help of a memorable and informative presentation the way of thinking free from discrimination becomes a central feature of their personality in the course of their socialization.

The presentations are held in Hungarian by the leader of the Foundation, the Congolese France Mutombo Tshimuanga. They are 45 to 60 minutes long, depending on the venue. The photo and video materials presented have been collected over the course of our numerous missions to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia. The presentations are followed by a short discussion, during which the audience can ask questions and share their personal experiences and impressions. The topics and the tone of each presentation are tailored to the age and the interests of the participants. The wide range of photo and video materials at our disposal enable us to offer a great variety of presentations. If the venue is suitable, we also organise a food and drink tasting. A traditional menu we serve is the typical African dish, the fufu, originally made from corn flour or cassava, accompanied by bean in tomato sauce or mushroom.

    OUR OWN EVENTS:

    • Africa festivals of two or more days
    • Africa evenings for business organizations and companies
